OUR LEGACY

HONORING JOHN GLENN

John Herschel Glenn, Jr. (born July 18, 1921), (Col, USMC, Ret), is a former U.S. Marine Corps aviator engineer, astronaut and United States senator. He was selected as one of the “Mercury Seven” group of military test pilots selected in 1959 by NASA to become America’s first astronauts and fly the Project Mercury spacecraft.

In 1962, Glen became the first American to orbit the Earth and the fifth person in space. Glenn received the Congressional Space Medal of Honor in 1978, and was inducted into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame in 1990.

He retired from the Marine Corps in 1965 and was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1974 and served through January 3, 1999. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.

The Marine Corps Aviation Association (MCAA) John Glenn Squadron, based in Patuxent River, Maryland, honors the legacy of Senator John H. Glenn, Jr.—Marine aviator, combat veteran, test pilot, astronaut, and the first American to orbit the Earth. The squadron was chartered in 2005 with Senator Glenn’s approval and reflects the values he championed throughout his life: service, excellence, innovation, and leadership.

In keeping with Glenn’s vision, the squadron supports Marine Corps aviation, recognizes outstanding acquisition and aviation professionals, and promotes STEM education through scholarships and community outreach programs. Senator Glenn agreed to lend his name to the squadron with the expectation that it would inspire future generations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while serving the local community.

Today, the John Glenn Squadron continues to preserve his legacy by fostering excellence in Marine aviation, supporting educational opportunities, and encouraging the spirit of exploration, service, and achievement that defined John Glenn’s extraordinary life.
